The College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) makes an impact to thousands of students each year. In 2019, more than 10,000 students, parents, teachers and members of the community participated in events hosted by COSAM’s Office of Outreach.

Through the year, the office hosts events on the Auburn University campus and throughout the state to increase the awareness of STEM education. These interactive and fun events reached out to more than 280 schools with an array of exciting programming including puzzle challenges, science demonstrations and hands-on opportunities for students of all ages.

The Auburn Mathematical Puzzle Challenge or AMP’d impacted 210 high school students in October and 125 middle school students. Destination STEM brought 1,300 students together for one of the largest single-day events hosted by the Office of Outreach. Students from sixth through 10th grades explore the Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum packed with science demonstrations, hands-on 3D printing experiences, and much more. Getting Under the Surface (GUTS) offered approximately 50 students and parents a chance to learn about anatomical structures and DNA through hands on activities.

The State Science Olympiad brings 1,000 middle and high school students together on the Auburn campus to compete in 23 events on topics of life science, Earths science and space, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.

Science Matters impacts almost 500 elementary and middle school students with seven fun weeks of STEM-based activities. Spring into Science offers 150 students and their parents to explore almost 20 different science stations. The event is made possible with the help of the Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) group’s support.

COSAM’s Office of Outreach shares robotic-based program with the Southeastern Center for Robotics Education (SCORE) through the Greater East Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF) that touched more than 400 students and teachers. The annual South’s BEST Regional Robotics Championship brings 4,000 students, parents and teachers together from throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Students, parents and teachers have an opportunity to connect and learn through STEM-based activities. The Office of Outreach impacts not only our community, but our entire state.
