GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS
MASTER OF SCIENCE AND MASTER OF EDUCATION
OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES
The goal of the Adult Education master’s degree program is to prepare professionals for advanced placement in adult learning facilitation. Two degree options exist: (1) Master of Science—M.S., (2) Master of Education—M.Ed. Course work is designed to prepare individuals to incorporate prevailing educational theories into practice and to provide continuous program and technical updating as well as advanced professional development. The master’s program is designed to extend the knowledge, understanding, and experiences related to andragogy that help to facilitate the development of sound educational practices and the ability to make informed decisions and judgements based on the literature and best practices in the profession.
The master’s program is accredited by the Alabama State Department of Education. Additionally, the adult education faculty endorse the Standards for Graduate Programs in Adult Education as adopted by the Commission of Professors of Adult Education of the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education.
Degree Requirements Beyond Graduate School Minimums:
No additional standards for the Master of Science or the Master of Education are required for the degrees. The Advisory Committee is responsible for establishing appropriate course requirements for individual graduate students.

Required Departmental Courses
Courses are selected with the guidance and approval of the Advisory Committee.
Elective Departmental Courses
With approval by the Advisory Committee, the student may use any appropriate ADED graduate course (6000-level and above) to satisfy degree requirements.
Required Supporting Courses from Other Departments
As appropriate for the student’s career and educational goals, the Advisory Committee may require and approve courses from other departments within or outside the College of Education. Other departments may include, but are not limited to, Curriculum and Instruction; Educational Foundations, Leadership, and Technology; and/or other departments which provide coursework focusing on human learning and development.

M.Ed. – Non-thesis program (30 semester hours minimum)
M.S. – Thesis program (30 semester hours minimum)
