LANCE DAVIS

Personal Information

My name is Lance Davis and I am from Pine Mountain, Georgia. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health Science from The University of Georgia and I am attending Auburn University pursuing my graduate degree.

My interest in building science began with an internship, for my undergraduate degree, in environmental health science. I worked in areas of environmental health that included land application management and residential home site inspection. I have also had rewarding experiences in the Habitat for Humanity Program. This peaked my interest in pursuing a degree in the construction field and I am currently pursuing my Master’s Degree in Construction Management.

I am interested in residential contracting as well as residential development. I am highly interested in learning more about companies involved in these areas. My intended graduation is Spring 2002, and I will be looking for an internship in these areas during the summer of 2001.

Personal Information

What brought me to Auburn University and Building Science?

As an Interior Design major at Iowa State University I was able to work with designers and builders during internships and summer construction and carpentry work.  During this time I became more aware of historic preservation and the importance of quality building techniques, as well as the social and community planning aspects needed in order to preserve old buildings.  After graduating with a Community & Regional Planning degree in Design and Historic Preservation, I found enjoyment in the building aspect of preservation and therefore began searching for a quality building science program.

My long-term goals are to work in the specialty construction field consisting of adaptive reuse, renovations, and preservation in residential dwellings, urban development, and small commercial settings.  I have a strong interest in universal design that accommodates all people while still preserving the design and original integrity of a building.

JAIME HOWELL

Personal Information

I graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration in 1995.  I then went to Austin, Texas to work in various sales positions.  While I was making good money, I did not like the work that I was doing.

I went together with an acquaintance to open a small electrical sub-contracting company, Service Electric Inc.  We specialized in renovations of multi family residential sites, above 400 units, around the nation.  We employed up to 10 people at any given time.  Business was good for about one and a half years until we ran into a contract dispute.

With the dissolution of Service Electric I was forced to look at my options, I enjoyed the part of the construction industry that I had seen and went to talk to various contractors about different aspects of the industry I had not been exposed to.  With this in mind I decided to go back to school to get my Masters in Building Science here at Auburn University.  I am interested in medium to High in commercial construction whether it be new or renovation.  I want to go into a firm that offers me the ability to go after an array of construction opportunities.

Doug Martin

Personal Information

My biggest interests in construction vary widely.  Large international construction and high-end residential construction are most fascinating to me.  I have just returned from participating in the MBS International Construction Study Experience 2000 (my third quarter abroad).  Last summer I worked for a high-end ($1 – 5 million per) residential homebuilder, D. Hal Averett, Contractor, Inc.  During architecture school I interned with my hometown’s most prominent architecture firm, Hecht, Burdeshaw, Johnson, Kidd, and Clark.  In between I have done freelance work and worked for Auburn University in a competitively awarded GTA position.  My undergraduate work earned me a Bachelor of Architecture degree and I am presently pursuing a Masters degree in Building Science.  I want to pull the designing and construction of buildings closer together.  Architecture and construction have a very unique relationship.  Architecture has construction as its purpose and its means.

HUTCH PEDEN

Personal  Information

I graduated high school the summer of 1991 and began my college career with absolutely no idea what career path I was planning to take.  I attended a community college for a year and then decided to take some time off and try to find my niche.  I took a job with a friend who had just started a residential framing business.  I soon realized that I would like to make a career out of this type of work.

I was very fortunate to work for someone who would take the time to teach you how to do something, as opposed to guide you through it.  I was also very fortunate to experience a lot of different aspects of the business as a whole.  I quickly realized that in order to get to where I wanted to be in the construction industry, education was going to play a valuable role.  I talked with several people who were already established in the construction field. Auburn University’s Building Science program came highly recommended.

I came to Auburn in the summer of 1996 with the intentions of getting a dual major in Business Management and Building Science.  Along the way I decided that it would be in my best interest to get a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a Master of Building Science.  I received a Bachelor of Business Management in the fall of 1999 and I am currently on track to receive a Master of Building Science in the summer of 2001.

THOMAS RHODEN

Personal Information

My name is Thomas Rhoden. I am currently a graduate student in the Auburn University department of Building Science. I went to undergraduate school at the University of Mississippi where I received degrees in English and Journalism. After graduating, I went to work in sales for a large telecommunications company in Jackson, MS. After working in that job for two years, an opportunity came along that I was unable to pass up. An acquaintance was involved in the start up of a new home building business and needed some extra help. Although I had no experience in that field, I did have a lot of motivation and a strong desire to learn. I worked for that company for over two years. I performed many tasks, but ultimately I fell into the superintendent/project manager role. Because we were a small company with little experience, I learned many things about construction in those two years. More importantly though, I learned that construction was the way that I wanted to earn a living. Wanting to increase my knowledge of the constructing industry, I did a lot of research on schools that might have something to offer me in that field. It quickly became apparent that the Department of Building Science at Auburn University was a leader in that field, and therefore the place that I wanted to go in order to take my construction experience to the next level.

INGRAM THORNTON

Personal Information

My name is Ingram Thornton.  I grew up in Marion, AL and am a 1995 graduate of the University of Alabama with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.  Working at Camp McDowell, Episcopal Diocese of Alabama, during summers throughout college, I had the unique opportunity to participate in a project that involved the dismantling of a cabin south of Montgomery, AL, transport to Nauvoo, AL, and reassembly at Camp McDowell. While I was only involved with a small portion of the project, it sparked interest in building as well as the preservation and restoration of historic places. My next summer at Camp McDowell afforded me the opportunity to participate in the construction of a new cabin that serves as a welcome center for the camp.

Upon completion of a pre-law curriculum in Tuscaloosa, I decided to join the work force for a while prior to proceeding to Law School; during which time I accumulated several experiences that would ultimately change my career path and lead me here to earn a Master of Building Science Degree at Auburn University.

Upon graduation I moved to Atlanta, GA to work as a reporter for the newspaper. My assignment there was to cover city council, design review board, zoning and development, and planning commission meetings in Roswell, GA.  This experience enlightened me on aspects of development from the perspectives of builders, developers, municipalities, and the community, giving me insight on the impact construction and development have on a community as well as reinforcing my belief and interest in preserving our historic sites.

After approximately one year as a reporter I discovered the need for adequate income and found a position as a territory manager for a wood flooring distributor in Atlanta. Much of my duty there consisted of calling on home builders and flooring subcontractors, both commercial and residential. This experience afforded me insight on the dynamic of the construction market as well as factors involved with decision making in a business environment.

The cumulative effect of these experiences leads me in pursuit of a career in the construction industry.  I find this an extremely exciting industry for someone in my position as a graduate student with so many possibilities out there and so many companies doing great things.  Each class and every encounter with a different construction professional leads me closer to my niche in the market.

ZAC WOLFE

Personal Information

Although I lived in many different cities throughout my life, I consider Franklin, TN home, which is where I attended all four years of high school.  Upon my graduation, I enrolled in Auburn University where I received my Bachelors Degree in Finance.  Spending every summer, Christmas break, and some spring breaks building pools for JD’s Pool Service really captured my interest in the construction industry.  During my stint at JD’s Pool Service I gained invaluable hands-on field experience with earthwork, concrete, plumbing, and electrical work.  I immediately enrolled in the Master of Building Science program following the completion of my Bachelors Degree.

I am now in my second year as a graduate student after spending the summer working for Bovis Lend Lease as an assistant to multiple Project Managers.  Once I earn my Masters, I plan to work overseas as a Project Engineer for an international construction company.
