Dixieland was the popular music of the 1920's and the early type of jazz. It first developed around New Orleans, where Black brass band members and White brass band members listened to each other and tried to learn from each other. The Storyville District was the first center of musical development, @1897-1917. Chicago was the next center of development of Dixieland (solo improvisation, driving feel, @1918-1930), followed by New York (@1930-1947).
