Pine is an email shell program (client) which provides a menu interface for email. At each screen, available commands are listed at the bottom.
1. Go to the MS Student Computer Lab. Go to the "Lonestar Help" terminal. Type in your first and last name and press return. Discover your login name and remember it.
2. Go to the music lab and start the program Telnet.
Choose Open Connection
under the File Menu. Type "lonestar" in the top box and press return.
3. When "login" appears, type your login name and press return. Make sure that you type it exactly--lower and upper cases are important!
4. When "password" appears, type your social security number with no dashes and press return.
5. If you typed correctly, you will be asked to change your password. Type in a new password and press return. The new password must have at least 6 characters, and it must include a number. Remember it! When asked again, type the new password again and press return. From now on, ou will use the new password (unless you change it again).
6. At the lonestar main menu choose Email by typing "E". At the e-mail services menu, press return once to open mail folders, press return while the INBOX folder is highlighted to open your INBOX. (You may use the arrow or tab keys to select different folders to open.)
7. Press "c" to compose a message. At the "To" line type your professor's login "kwalls" and press return to go to the "Subject" line. At "Subject" type "My first message"
8. Press return to get to the message area. Type in a message. Be creative. When finished, hold down the control key and press "x". When the computer responds with the question "send message?" press "y". Play around with the other Pine commands. Find out how to quit Pine. Select "L"s in the lonestar menu to get back to the Local> prompt when you are finished.
1. Use Telnet to connect to utsaibm.utsa.edu
2. At the login prompt type "library". At the next screen, press return. This login starts a publically available library system.
3. Read the instructions to look up references, etc.
4. When you are finished, type "stop" and press return to log out of utsaibm. Make sure to quit the Telnet program too.
1. Start Netscape by double-clicking its icon.
2. Observe the "N" icon in the upper right of the Netscape window. Wait until the "stars" stop moving before selecting a link.
3. To browse, simply click on an underlined word or a graphic.
4. When the "stars" stop moving, you can try another link.
5. Email a message to your instructor about what you found on the Web.
