Auburn & 'bama Team Notes

1996

Terry Bowden fired the first shot of the 1996 war before the new year was a week old. On January 5th, Bowden called a press conference to announce the hiring of Alabama defensive coordinator "Brother" Bill Oliver. With national signing day only a month away, Bowden was putting Auburn's house in order while spreading the disarry in the Tide camp.

Heroic play by Auburn's walking wounded, Jimmy Brumbaugh and Mark Smith, and the gutsy effort by the young Auburn defense provided a backdrop for a 20-point second quarter scoring spree by the Tigers in the 1996 (and perhaps last) Iron Bowl. ('bama's contract with Legion Field extends through 2000, but speculation is that the Tide will try to move the game to Bryant-Denny by 1998.) A 75-yard Tide scoring drive in the closing moments of the game spoiled Auburn's comeback as 'bama slipped past Auburn 24-23. Tide coach, Gene Stallings, announced his resignation after the game.
