Outreach

Scientific progress does not solely depend on research efforts, but also upon the ability of society to understand and use these accomplishments. Increasing numbers of schools and community colleges have downsized or eliminated laboratory courses due to a lack of funding. These financial decisions effectively remove the most appealing aspects of chemistry and biology from the curriculum.

In the summer of 2006, we initiated a pilot project with Dr. C. Donald and continue now with Mrs Aglan at Auburn High School and Mrs Bush at Opelika High School to offer chemistry-interested high school students the opportunity for hands-on experience in an organic chemistry lab. The project is supported by the National Science Foundation.
  • 'Chemistry Nights': Do a simple organic experiment and make real food flavors for yoghurt and ice cream!

  • Summer internships for high school students.

  • Hands-on experiments for 5th - 8th grade students that can be tested during AU Explore in the College of Sciences and Mathematics. See, how much fun we had...!

  • Mini-demonstration course as integral part of several outreach programs in the College of Sciences and Mathematics to show you that
CHEMISTRY IS PART OF OUR DAILY LIFE!
A powerpoint presentation explains the chemical background of 12 demonstration experiments to highlight
    • the requirements on dyes to color foods, textiles or cars
    • the different constraints on polymers to be used as toys, textiles, for food storage, in medical applications or for insulating foams in houses
    • the development of medical test tools based on chemical reactions
    • luminescence phenomena by fireflies in the backyard
    • the survival methods of a cell: catalytic conversion of potentially harmful hydrogen peroxide into water and molecular oxygen
