COURSE SYLLABUS Course Number: MATH6650 Course Title: THEORY OF NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisites: MATH2650 and MATH2660. Corequisite: Objectives: This course introduces the student to numerical methods for approximating solutions of partial differential equations. In particular, it introduces the student to the finite difference and finite element methods. Course Content (typical): Review of Partial Differential Equations and Linear Algebra (2 weeks) Classification of pdes, Methods for solving linear systems of equations Hyperbolic Problems (3.5 weeks) Method of chracteristics, Finite difference method Elliptic Problems (4.5 weeks) Finite difference method, Finite element method Parbolic Equations (4 weeks) Explicit methods (finite differences), Implicit methods (finite differences), Semidiscretization (finite elements ) Possible Texts: William F.
