COURSE SYLLABUS Course Number: MATH4970 Course Title: Independent Study Credit Hours: 1-4 Prerequisites: Departmental approval, junior standing. Corequisite: Objectives: To provide for the interested mathematics student the opportunity to study mathematical topics of special interest to the student. Course Content: Students will work under the direction of a faculty member on an area of mathematics of mutual interest. Sample Outline Sample Independent Sudy: Bessel Functions. Definition of the functions and convergence theorems. A description of the space of functions approximated by Bessel functions. Solutions to ODE's that are represented by Bessel functions. If time permits: Solutions to PDE's that are represented by Bessel functions. Sample Grading and Evaluation Procedures: Students will be expected to have prepared assigned research assignments; write ups of selected assigned work will be collected. A term project will be assigned, the student will be required to present the project to the instructor.
