COURSE SYLLABUS Course Number: MATH2860 Course Title: MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION I I Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisites: MATH2850 Corequisite: Objectives: To present to the elementary education student the mathematical background necessary for an understanding of the mathematical principles that are introduced to children in the elementary grades. Emphasis on the elements of probability, informal geometry and mesurement. Course Content: Elementary Probability. [10 days] Empirical Probabilities, Principles of Counting, Theoretical Probability. Geometry [16 days] Basic concepts and axioms, Geometrical intuition and spatial sense, Figures, Curves and Polygons in the Plane, Tiling with Polygons , Three dimensional geometry, Geometric Proofs, Congruence, Geometric constructions, Similar Triangles . Measurement. [6 days] The Measurement Process, Length, Area, and Perimeter , The Pythagorean Theorem . Possible textbook: Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teacherss, Long and deTemple, 1996, Harper Collins. Grading and Evaluation Procedures: Quizzes, tests, midterm exam, final exam. Other methods of evaluation are used at the discretion of the instructor.
