COURSE SYLLABUS Course Number: MATH2850 Course Title: MATHEMATICS FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION I Credit Hours: 3 Prerequisites: MATH1600 Corequisite: Objectives: To present to the elementary education student the mathematical background necessary for an understanding of the mathematical principles that are introduced to children in the elementary grades. Emphasis on sets and an understanding og the number system (integers, fractions, decimals) and number theory. Course Content: Thinking Critically (Problem Solving). [6 days] Sets, Whole Numbers, and Functions. [8 days] Definitions, Concept of Axioms/Proof structure, Set operations, Venn diagrams, , Whole numbers (Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division), Relations and Functions. Numeration and Computation. [7 days] Different Number Bases, Algorithms for basic operations, Estimation. Number Theory. [6 days] Divisibility, Factorization, Prime numbers and Composite numbers, Greatest Common Divisor & Least Common Multiple. Integers. [3 days] Fractions and Rational Numbers. [ 6 days] Equivalence Classes, Fractions, Operations with rational numbers, Applications. Decimal numbers. [6 days] Properties, Infinite series/non terminating fractions, Operations, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Decimals and Fractions. Three hour exams. [3 days] Possible textbook: Mathematical Reasoning for Elementary Teachers, Long and deTemple, 1996, Harper Collins. Sample Grading and Evaluation Procedures: Students will be expected to have prepared assigned homework. Homework will occasionally be collected. Projects related to the teaching of mathematical concepts will be assigned. Quizzes may be unannounced. Grade Calculation Participation grade (includes: blackboard presentation and classwork, attendance, homework, quizzes): 10% Projects 15% Hour Tests (three tests at 15% each): 45% Final Exam: 30% Tentative Test Schedule Hour tests are given approximately every three weeks and will be announced a week ahead of time. Quizzes may or may not be announced; at least four quizzes will be given in the course of the semester. Friday is typically a good day for quizzes.
