Course Title: PRE-CALCULUS ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY

Credit Hours: 4

Prerequisites: High school geometry and second year high school algebra. Students are further

required either to have an appropriate score on the mathematics placement exam or to have passed MATH1000 with a "C" or better.

PRE-CALCULUS ALGEBRA AND TRIGONOMETRY (4). Pr., High school geometry and second year high school algebra. Students are further required either to have an appropriate score on the mathematics placement exam or to have passed MATH1000 with a "C" or better. Algebraic functions, Exponential and Logarithmic functions. Analytic and geometric properties of trigonometric functions.

Objectives:

To develop student mathematical and analytic skills. To give students the background and preparation necessary for calculus.

Course Content:

Rectangular coordinates: graphs of equations, lines. Complex numbers. The function: graphs of functions, quadratic functions, operations on functions, inverse functions. (6 days)

Systems of equations and inequalities, quadratic inequalities. (5 days)

Polynomial and Rational Functions. Zeros of polynomials, Properties of Division. (5 days)

Exponential and Logarithmic Functions. (6 days)

Basic trigonometry: angles, trigonometric functions of angles, trigonometric functions of real numbers, trigonometric graphs, applied problems. (9 days)

Advanced trigonometry: verifying trigonometric identities, trigonometric equations, addition and subtraction formulas, multiple-angle formulas, inverse trigonometric functions. (10 days)

Applications of Trigonometry: The Law of Sines, The Law of Cosines, De Moivre's Theorem, Vectors. (8 days)

Polar Coordinates. (4 days)

The Binomial Theorem. (3 days)

Exams and tests. (4 days)

JUSTIFICATION

The course will be used in conjunction with the mathematics placement test and is designed to bring students to the level of preparation which will enable them to take calculus.
