Converting a Triumph oil tank to Honda

This is a triumph oil tank I got from SweetNLow.  It was meant to be mounted vertically,
but the size of it is just what I needed for a horizontal oil tank on my fat bike.  Nothing else fit
so it was either make one from scratch or modify an existing tank.

The first thing I did was cut out the section that had the triumph fittings welded in. If you dont
know already, triumph lines are much smaller that Honda lines so it would severely  restrict
oil flow to the motor if you used it with the triumph fittings.  When SweetNLow sent me the
tank, it had stock Honda lines adapted to it with these god-awful reducers so that they could
use the triumph tank with stock Honda lines.  Please dont do that to your Honda!

Heres the tiny triumph fittings all cut out.  The next pic you'll see I loosly put masking tape
over the hole I cut so that the patch piece would not fall in before I got it tacked on.
Make sure you clean until it shines before you go welding.

Heres a patch piece and another look at the tape covered hole.  The tube you see in the
tank is whats left of the triumph vent that is now obsolete.

Heres the patch piece laid flush, and the next one is it with an ugly tack weld!

All welded up and cleaned.

Heres it is after some pressure testing and pin hole repair.  Should be good to go.

For some reason I did not take pics when I drilled the holes, cut the tube, or welded them
in, but here it is after that.  The main thing here for a Honda 750 is that the ID (Inner
Diameter) is at least 3/8 inch.  This is the smallest ID of  the stockHonda oil lines, so you
know it will not restrict oil flow.  The return line from the motor (oil going into the tank) goes
almost to the top of the tank on the inside.  The exit line from the tank (oil going to the
motor) should stick up about 1/4-1/2 inch inside the tank to allow for heavy particles
to settle in the tank.  I put a little spot weld on either side of both fitting on the tank so
when you slip a line over it and clamp it, it can hold on.

Here are the fittings again (after pressure testing again) and also I filled in some big gashes
in the metal and the spot wear a chain had been rubbing for years.

Here are the crazy cock-eyed mounts I had to make to fit my frame.  I hope you can see
on this other pic where I usede a dremmel tool and scratch arrows for in and out on the
fittings so there is no confusion later.

Here is is on the bike.  No vents yet, but I like to put those in the cap.

I'll have more pics later when its done.  Now all you(I) need is some 1/2 inch ID clear
pressure line for the oil lines.  After you cut the crimped pieces off the stock Honda oil lines
and pull the oil lines off, you'll notice that the fittings are for lines to be slipped on, so just use
the fittings that go into the motor and slip the oil line on.  Then ride it like you stole it !!!!!
