Poker Winning Strategies

If you want to successfully play in the highest cash games or be a constant winner in the biggest poker tournaments, you need years of experience and a high level of skill. There is no way through. But there are a lot of basic strategies which will easily make you a winner at smaller games. Every player should know these basic concepts and so should you.

Be patient

Patience and endurance are skills every great poker player must have to be threat at the tables. But being patient doesn’t mean you just have to sit there hour for hour and watch the other players fighting for pots. It only means you should stick to good starting hands which will come up quite often, so you don’t have to worry about getting board. Playing only good to premium starting hands will allow you to come out ahead in most pots you play. That’s an easy strategy but most players just won’t do that although it’s more than half way through to be a winning player. Poker is not about winning the most pots – it’s about winning the most money at the end of the night. So there is no reason to start every game as if there is no tomorrow. You don’t have to play every single hand you’re dealt. Be patient and wait for your good starting hands because that is exactly the time you should move your chips in the centre of the table – when you have the best hand.

Luck evens out in the long run

There are times when every hand you play is just slightly weaker than the one your opponent has or you get outdrawn every time you have the better hand. But that doesn’t mean you made a mistake. That’s Poker. Sometimes you make everything right and play perfect and still loose. That’s the luck factor which makes poker such an interesting game. The fact that anyone can beat anyone at any time makes this game so interesting. You just can not be a winner in every time you play. Sometimes luck isn’t on your side. But that doesn’t mean you should change your or let you affect in any way. Short term results don’t mean much in poker and as long as you make good solid plays most of the time you will come out as a winner in the long run. Many people can’t handle this swings and will start playing badly as soon as they start to loose. Don’t be one of them. If you feel you’re out of line just quit and come back the next day when you’re focused and calmed again. Playing bad only because you lost a pot or two isn’t a very good poker strategy.

It’s all about the edge

Being a winning poker player means you have an edge over your opponents. But that doesn’t mean you need to have an edge over all of your opponents – in fact it doesn’t actually mean you have to be the best poker player at the table you’re playing at to be a decent winner in the game. You only have to be better than some players at the table and try to avoid the players which as good as or even better than you. Why fighting a lion when there is mouse just around the corner? Just take the chips from the weaker opponents and use them against the stronger ones later in the game. Many players want to challenge everyone and think they can beat everyone at the table but most of the time this kind of player will end up being a looser. You don’t have to beat everyone. Just make sure you attack the players you have an edge on. No need to fight uphill battles in poker.

Tilt – Tilt – Tilt

It doesn’t matter how good your poker skills are when you are not able to handle your emotions right at the tables. In fact being mentally stable is one of the biggest skills, if not the biggest skill, any player should have. There are many strong players with extraordinaire reading skills which just can’t win in the long run because they are not able to handle the swings. As soon as they loose one bigger pot they loose their mind along with every single chip in front of them. This is called “tilt” or “going on tilt”. As mentioned earlier patience is a big part of a winning poker strategy. And being patient will help you to avoid going on tilt. Since you will play only good starting hands your swings will be much lesser and you won’t loose as often as someone how plays a lot of hands. Playing only a good starting hand and avoiding tilt are two basic concepts that will allow you to be a winning poker player without having years of experience.
