Samuel Adler, Sonata for Horn and Piano
(c-bb2) [1951] Adler
is an American composer. He was born in Germany in 1928, but came to
the U.S. in 1939. This Sonata makes a nice undergraduate recital piece.
It is in four movements with an overall range of c-bb2
and an approximate performance time of 10'. With a copyright date of
1951 it is one of the more musical examples of the academic style of
composition from the middle of this century. While each of the movements
is easily performable, performing the complete Sonata requires stamina.
The piano part very playable. The movements are: I.
Andante con moto - (c1-ab2)
This movement has the narrowest range of the four
movements and requires the ability to play
alternating eight note and triplet rhythms. Special attention must be
paid to the second half of the tempo designation (con moto) for this
movement to work musically. II.
Allegro scherzando - (g-a2) This is a true scherzo
in 6/8. Clear articulation and strong dynamics down to the lowest note
are required. III. Moderato
ma con appassionata - (c-ab2) This
movement includes an extended (24 measure) unaccompanied section for the
solo horn which spans the entire pitch range of the movement. IV.
Allegro con fuoco - ( bb- bb2)
The syncopated main theme and triplet sections both provide a challenge
at full speed. This is the one movement that sometimes requires a bit of
practice with the accompanist to fit the parts together well. |

Beethoven, Sonata in F, op. 17
(G-g2) [1801]
This
is one of the standard works in our repertoire that every serious
student of the horn should know. It was one result of Beethoven's
relationship with the famous horn virtuoso Giovanni Punto (Stich). The
relationship between the horn and piano is extremely balanced, almost as
if a musical conversation is taking place. The original instruments
(natural horn and fortepiano) were very well matched in terms of volume.
It is important to maintain good balance and appropriate dynamics on
modern instruments, which have a wider range of dynamics available to
them.
