Charon's Gondollied
Wind Quintet

This piece demands a fair degree of musical maturity and the ability to sustain a line well.

There is a grim joke in the title. The Gondollied idea comes from the Mendelssohn songs without words but Charon's Gondola is quite different from Mendelssohn's, Charon is the boatman who rows the dead over the river in Greek mythology. But The dead must pay a penny as the fare.

To many Greeks the idea of  the Underworld was the place where the troubles of this world were forgotten. This piece asks in musical terms how a Greek would have felt if he did not have the fare and Charon turned back?

It's a bit deep and the audience don't really need to understand all that is going on but it explains the title.

Igors day Out
Wind Quintet

This piece is fun. There a lot of meter changes. The idea was of Stravinsky riding a very old seaside donkey. I suppose in Musical style this is a cross between Stravinsky and Leroy Anderson

Wind Quintet

My wind quintet had been playing some very iffy arrangements of Bach so I promised them something a bit special. This is difficult and long but is an arrangement of a truly magnificent work. If you need a big piece for the climax half of your concert have a look at this
