AU Horn Studio Newsletter

The semester is going extremely well. It is, as you would expect, quite busy. The I.H.S. horn workshop in Boone, NC was a big success. Our newest faculty members, Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell and Dr. William Powell, traveled up to the mountains and we did Auf Dem Strom on the regional artists concert. The tour, in January succumbed to scheduling problems, but we're going to try to do one at the end of the year. Like last year we will do performances, clinics, sectionals, or anything else that you think would be helpful for your horn section.  Please contact me if you’re interested in having us stop at your school, or give a performance.

I've taken the semester off from recitals (except for individual pieces) to focus on boring administrative stuff, but the students will be playing on a studio recital on April 10th. Jake Maurer (FR. Music-Ed.) will be playing 2 movements of the Samuel Adler "Sonata," and Steven Huston (SR. Mech.-Eng.) will be doing the Franz Strauss "Theme and Variations." In addition to that there will be some horn ensembles, ensembles from other studios, and perhaps a selection or 2 from the faculty. This will be held in Stevenson Hall (Goodwin 102) the same evening that the All-State solo contest is going on in the recital hall (Goodwin 105), so if you're here for all-state come over & let us play for you when you're done.

Horn club is still meeting. At the moment our time is still 6:30 on Wednesday’s, but there seem to be more people with conflicts than in  the past, so let me know if you’re interested but can’t make that time. We had a great concert/picnic at the end of the summer and I’d really like to see that group continue being as active as they have been. We are looking for performance opportunities, but at the moment we're just focused on learning some more pieces and improving individually as players.

One of the main goals of Auburn University is community outreach; so please don’t be shy about asking me to come out and to do a performance, work with your horns, or help out in any way I can. That is why we’re here. I can be contacted at:

I hope you're all having a productive year, and don’t forget to practice your Kopprasch. I have begun including a short technical clinic on the back of each of newsletter. I hope this proves useful.

Sincerely,

Bill Schaffer
