The state of Georgia is uniquely situated in one of the most
biologically diverse areas in the temperate world, and the
fishes that call the waters of this state home show this
diversity. There are currently more than 280 species of
freshwater fish in Georgia's waters, and there are still more
that have yet to be described. Georgia ranks in the top 5 states
with the greatest fish species diversity.
Given its geographic location, it is no wonder that it
has a high number of species. There are 10 different river
systems that flow through Georgia, and each is different from
the rest. This large number of species in such a small area
makes things difficult though; with Georgia's growing human
population, the strain on the fishes and other aquatic organisms
of the state is growing at an exponential rate. Conservation now
is key to the continued existence of many aquatic species in our
waters.
