I will link course syllabi, test solutions, and answers to frequently
asked questions to this site. Also planned is a description of my research
interests, and a list of my publications. I welcome your suggestions
as to what I might post that would be helpful or interesting to my
students or to others likely to visit this location. In accordance
with this frame of mind I suggest Alice's
webpage which contains some interesting pictures of Russian landmarks.
You might also consider the two links in the next paragraph. If you are
interested in the Actuarial program or the courses that I teach, then you
may contact me by phone at 334-844-6570, or preferably by e-mail
. Currently I am teaching MH1620, second
semester calculus, and MH6370, a
course in Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory .
A Note to Students:
To a mathematician the solution to a difficult mathematical problem can be as beautiful and as satisfying as Woman with a Parasol by Claude Monet . While I cannot guarantee that your feelings about mathematics will ever coincide with my own, I sincerely hope that your mathematical experience does not leave you feeling like this , The Scream by Edvard Munch .
We strive to provide an excellent mathematical experience for you. But, success depends upon your active participation. If do your work thoroughly, and on a daily basis then your chances of success are greatly enhanced. On the other hand if you frequently find excuses to postpone or omit your work, then your chances of success are poor. Mathematics cannot be learned at the last minute; moreover, passive participation will not lead to success.
Appreciation of a Monet is immmediate, but try to put yourself in the
place of the artist. How much did he plan, how many trial sketches were
there, and how many times was he frustrated before the above was produced?
This is the way you should approach mathematics. Its beauty is not immediate
to most of us, but if you work hard enough some of that beauty will manifest
itself, and your success will follow.
