When a masculine animate noun is the direct object in a sentence it
takes genitive endings:
Виктор знает Максима.
All animate nouns (masculine, feminine, neuter) in the plural take
genitive endings when they are the direct object of the sentence:
Мы знаем этих молодых артистов.
Они с интересом слушали соседок.
The person to whom something or someone belongs is in the genitive case:
Это сын Сергея Антоновича.
Это дом Ивана Ивановича.
Nouns as modifiers
When a nown modifies another noun, it is in the genitive case. It normally
follows the noun modified.
Где здесь остановка автобуса?
Здесь новый дом отдыха.
Вот мой номер телефона.
Non-existence and absence
The non-existence or absence of something or someone is expressed with the
genitive case.
1. В этом городе нет музея.
2. В нашем доме нет телефона.
3. Лары сейчас нет дома.
Genitive with нет
The word нет is used to indicate that someone doesn't have
something. In this meaning it is the opposite of есть. The thing or person that
someone doesn't have is in the genitive case.
У меня нет дочери.
У кого нет машины?
У Кати нет сестры.
Genitive with numbers
Expressions with the numerals 2 - 4 (два, две, три, четыре),
require the genitive singular ending.
All other numbers whose last numeral is 2 - 4 (except 11-14), also
require the genitive singular case:
У меня 2 книги.
У Антона 3 сына.
У Сергея четыре галстука.
В этом городе 4 музея.
Моему брату 22 года.
Expressions with the numbers 11 - 19, and all other numbers
require the genitive plural case.
We also use the genitive plural case with expressions of quantity,
such as: сколько, несколько, много, мало.
When a quantity expression is the subject of the sentence, the
verb will be singular, and in the past tense it will be neuter:
На урок пришло 5 студентов.
Здесь рабоает мало иностранцев.
Genitive with prepositions
These prepositions will always require a noun in the genitive case:
для, из, через, от, около, без, близко, напротив, посреди, до, у, мимо.
Я купил эту книгу для отца.
Она приехала из Москвы.
Она живёт около библиотеки.
Машина находится напротив института.
Детский сад находится недалеко от реки. От Москвы до Киева мы ехали поездом.
Поезд проезжал мимо лесов.
Летом мы отдыхали близко от озера.
Мы поехали в деревню без сына. У брата новая машина.
Бабушка стоит у окна.
The preposition c will require a noun in the genitive case when it
is used to indicate movement from a place or an activity. You would
use this preposition with nouns that require the preposition на in
the prepositional case to indicate location.
Они идут с концерта.
Они уже вернулись с юга.
