Borisov-Musatova, V. E. Self-Portrait with Sister, Detail. 1898

Notes:
Detail from "Self-Portrait with Sister (Elena Elpidiforovna Borisova-Musatova)" This well-known 1898 double portrait by Borisov-Musatov shows the Impressionist style he adopted in the early 1890s. The painting expresses musing and mystery rather than action; the connection between brother and sister is quite enigmatic. Reflecting his knowledge of French art, the vegetation and lighting is derived from Edouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis. (00418)
