The Argument of the Dialog

Some of the use of dialog in this film assists Stone in making the argument he wants to make, but some of it still detracts from that message. Some of the most helpful instances of it for Stone are the numerous mentionings of demons. At one point, when Mallory gets upset with Mickey for yelling at her, he tells her, "It's me! Not some demon!" A scene later when they meet the Indian, Mallory remarks, "I think we're the demons." As the Indian, shot by Mickey, lays dying, he confirms Mallory's impression by saying (though they don't speak his language and can't understand him), "Twenty years ago I saw a demon in my dreams. I was waiting for you." Mickey comes to agree with the Indian that there is in fact a demon inside him. In his interview with Wayne Gale he refers to it constantly, concluding that, "only love can kill the demon." These references to demons and suggestions that demons cause Mickey and Mallory to do what they do can be preceived as having two intentions. They can, in yet another way, suggest that Mickey and Mallory are not to blame for their actions, that the demons made them do it. But what seems to be Stone's intention for this element is instead an attempt on his part to show them as evil. It's not the best way this could have been done, but it is at least a step in the right direction.

Another use of dialog that helps Stone make his argument more effectively is the conversation that Mickey and Mallory have at the end of the movie with Wayne Gale before they kill him. When he pleads with them that he helped them escape, Mickey tells him, "You're scum - you did it for the ratings." He goes on to explain his actions: "It's not about you... Killing you and what you represent is a statement." These lines of dialog are incredibly important to the film because they are the only place one can find any indication that the film is an indictment of the media.

However, despite this bright spot, there are also instances where dialog is damaging to Stone and the clarity of his argument. For instance, when Mickey is being interviewed by Wayne Gale, he talks about killing as a wonderful and powerful and pure thing. "Murder's pure," he tells Wayne. "You're the one who made it impure." This, in hand with Mickey and Mallory's murder of Wayne at the end of the film, could be seen as suggesting that what Wayne and the rest of the media does is worse than what Mickey and Mallory do. This is a very dangerous thing to suggest.
