| Pathos: Editing |
Editing in neither The Bad News Bears nor Hardball is particularly remarkable. Its main noteworthy use in both films is through the construction of montages, and the differences between those montages helps to highlight the differences between the films.
In The Bad News Bears, you have a nice pair of montage sequences paired with each other as before-and-after sequences. The first of the two is a montage of the Bears' first game against the Yankees. Over and over, you have a Yankee batter making a hit and one of the Bears players making a fielding error. Later in the movie, after the Bears have recruited Kelly Leak, allowing them some strength in their hitting lineup, you have another montage of the Bears fielding hits, but this time a combination of comedic errors and successful, sometimes very good, plays. This makes a connection with the audience not only with the comedy of it, but also with allowing them to feel proud for the Bears that they are starting to improve. It is important that the montage concerns all the team members and not just Kelly's hitting, because this emphasizes that the whole team is improving.
Hardball uses montages, as well, but the game montages in this film concentrate as much on the players' reactions to their improvements in later montages as compared to earlier ones as it concentrates on the actuall ball playing. There is also a really good montage composed of shots of the boys as Conor treats them to a major league ball game, highlighting the joy on the boys' faces as they see their heroes play in real life. This gives the audience a real sense of how important this game is to them all.
