HISTORY OF IDEAS IN PSYCHOLOGY

TEXT: B. M. Thorne and T. B. Henley (1997). Connections in the history and systems of psychology, Houghton- Miflin, Co. ISBN = 0-395-67084-5.

UNITS: I. Chs. 2 and 3

II. Chs. 4, 6, and 7

III. Chs. 9, 10, and 11

IV. Chs. 12, 13, 14, 15

V. Ch. 20

LECTURES: Please understand that you are responsible for reading, remembering, and understanding the material in the text. You are responsible also for identifying material that you don't understand even though you've tried, and for bringing to me the relevant questions. My lectures will be about the same topics as those in the book, but they are not based on the book, and they do not amount to an effort to teach the book to you.

EXAMS: There will be a 100-point exam on each Unit. It will include relatively short essay questions about both textbook and lecture material. I will try to give adequate warning about each upcoming examination, but you should make very effort to keep up with the reading.

ATTENDANCE: No actual record of attendance will be kept. However attendance is important because of lecture material that is on the exams and is not in the book. I will detect really rare attendance and will lower your grade by one letter.

ATMOSPHERE: I will be prepared each and every day to say something that is well organized and relevant. I will need your help to know when I am not communicating satisfactorily; when something needs to be repeated or re-phrased, etc. This ends my 30th year as psychology professor so it's just not possible to put myself in your shoes; learning this material for the first time. So help me teach you. Feel free to ask questions, to voice incredulity or disagreement, etc. A lively class is fun.

OFFICE HOURS: 209 Thach - any late afternoon except Friday.

GRADES: A = 90 - 100%; B = 80 - 89.9%; C = 70 - 79.9%; D = 60 - 69.9%; F = 59. 9% and below.
