Born Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat al-Qudwa al-Husseini (1929-2004), but known popularly as Yasser Arafat, chaired the Palestine Liberation Organization from 1969 to 2004 and served as president of the Palestinian National Authority from 1993 to 2004. Won Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
