Part II:  Passage Identification

Instructions:  Choose three of the following passages.  All passages chosen need to be from different authors.  You cannot do both a Shakespearean sonnet and Much Ado About Nothing. Then, in your blue book, answer the questions below.  Be sure to answer in the numbered format.  In answering, give as much detail as you can.  The more that you can show you know the better.  (Part II = 75 points)

1) Identify the work from which the passage is taken. For full credit on The Lais, Arabian Nights or Canterbury Tales, you will need the title of specific story.  For Decameron, I will not expect you to know the day and story numbers.  (5 points)
2) Put the passage in context as fully as you can.  Who is involved?  What is happening in the story? Do not summarize the passage in front of you. (5 points)
3) Explain the importance of the passage to the work.  How is it important the theme or meaning of the work, i.e. why would I have chosen this particular passage? Note:  I am not asking the importance to the plot or story line.  How is the passage important to the message of the work? (5 points)
4) Give background about the work, the type of genre, the author, time period, etc.  This information could be from introductions to the texts, my background lectures, web links I have provided or other class materials. (10 points)

Part III:  Shakespeare (Part III = 5 points)

Identify a theme from Much Ado About Nothing.  Give evidence for your belief that this is one of Shakespeare's main ideas in the play.
