The Century
Helmets are required on all four ride options. Ride goes rain or shine.
Google maps available here, courtesy of Tim McDonald
All riders will tour the lightly trafficked rural roads of Lee, Chambers, and Talladega Counties of East Alabama. Riders on the Johnny Ray Metric and Horseshoe Bender will ride over a World War II-era steel Bailey Bridge and a rare wood truss bridge. Riders on the Horseshoe Bender will ride through Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, which commemorates the 1814 Creek War. Here's a brief history of the Johnny Ray Train by Winston Smith T.
Road surfaces vary from asphalt to chipseal. The chipseal on Chambers County Road 389 - that five-mile stretch of road from Opelika to Cussetta - is smoother than it was in 2007!
Maps and Cue Sheets
Maps and cue sheets will be available at the registration table.
The Food
Starting at 7 am, John Stephens promises to flip some pancakes for a delicious breakfast that will be topped off with hot Starbucks coffee.
Starting around 11-12, John and Mike Hogan will flip some beef, turkey, and veggie burgers for lunch topped with chips and cold drinks. Jan and Larry Murphy, owners of Cold Stone Creamery in Auburn and in the East Chase Mall, Montgomery, will again treat riders with ice cream desserts. All costs included in your registration!
SAG and Rest Stops
SAG vehicles circle all routes. There are six, well-stocked rest stops, approximately 10-15 miles apart, with portapotties or restrooms.
Century Headquarters
Trinity United Methodist Church located at 800 2d Ave., Opelika, Ala. 36801, is the Century Headquarters. The Club is indebted to member William P. Fuller who made the arrangements. We wholeheartedly thank Rev. Ken Himes and the Church for their graciousness.
Registration, meals, showers and bathroom facilities are available at the Church.
The Church is easily accessible from any direction via Interstate 85. Take Exit 60 and follow S. 10th St. to Second Avenue. Turn North (Right) and see the Church on the Left (west).

The Charity
Each year the East Alabama Cycling Club sponsors a bicycle tour to benefit a designated charity. This year's charity is a Parkinson Disease foundation.
From 2007 to 2009, the Northwest Parkinson's Foundation was the club's charity. In 2009 the club donated $4,000, in 2008 we donated $3,000, and in 2007 we donated $2,400. In 2006 & earlier we used century profits to buy bicycles from The Bike Shop in Auburn for children at Christmas through the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program administered by the City of Auburn Fire Department.
Time Schedule: Saturday, 25 Sept. 2010
