Dataset Naming Standards

Purpose

Dataset naming standards should provide a simple, consistent policy for naming datasets. In developing a standard, five objectives were defined: first, to provide a simple framework for implementing data security, and administering and using computer data files; second, to promote a consistency in dataset names across departmental boundaries; third, to identify file content; fourth, to identify file usage; and fifth, to identify ownership, custodianship, or control of datasets.

Recognizing these objectives, the goals in creating a standard are to recognize the labor costs in implementing a standard and accordingly make all efforts to reduce the impact of the new standard, and to be flexible enough to minimize necessary exceptions while recognizing the need for exceptions.
