Kristen Hertwig
Kristen holds a special place in the history of the
Goodwin lab. Before there were graduate students--before
there was much of anything--Kristen joined the lab in January 2000
and worked nearly a year before the first graduate students
joined. Kris' contributions to the group cannot be
overstated. Her work was divided into two main
categories:
1) characterization of a novel extracellular catalase-peroxidase
from E. coli O157:H7, and 2) kinetic evaluation of
peroxidase-catalyzed oxidation of capsaicinoids. Her efforts
in both these areas were
fruitful. She had the opportunity to present her work
at a number
of meetings (see below), and papers have been published on both of
her projects. Kristen was selected to participate in the
"Posters on the Hill" forum on Capitol Hill in Washington,
D.C. The event was sponsored by the Council for
Undergraduate Research, and is designed to highlight the value of
undergraduate involvment in research activities to members of the
U.S. Senate and the U.S.
House of Representatives (see some photos).
Kristen received awards for her participation in research
including the Cell
and Molecular Biosciences Undergraduate Summer Research
Fellowship, and
the Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellowship.
