Studies in the Bhagavad Gita

Introduction

The following notes on the Bhagavad Gitawere composed during a study of the Gita conducted by the Sri Aurobindo Study Group in Auburn, Alabama, from June, 1994 through March, 1996. The group, which met biweekly, studied the Gita in light of the teachings and commentaries of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The Message of the Gita, containing Sri Aurobindo's translation and notes (edited by Anilbaran Roy), formed the basis of our study. Additional material included Sri Aurobindo's Essays on the Gitaand various discussions of the Gita by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. After each group meeting, our discussion notes were compiled in a short (two-page) format, edited, and distributed to group members and other interested persons. In February, 1999, I began to revise those notes and post them on this web site. While I do not quote Sri Aurobindo and the Mother directly, their insights and language formed the basis for our study and, consequently, of these notes. Any errors of language or interpretation, however, are products of my human intellect.

Perhaps some of you will find these notes of of interest; others may find them useful in conducting their own Gita study groups. Hopefully they will arouse your interest enough to read Sri Aurobindo's essays. Comments and suggestions are welcome.
