1. [Required Activity] 100 words (minimum), email to group. Ask five persons (together or separately) to close their eyes and form a mental picture of the first image that occurs to them when you say a word. When their eyes are closed and they are concentrating, say "dog." Then ask them to describe the dog they see. What does this exercise tell you?
2.Difference in words in different parts of the country. "Y'all" in South equivalent of "you guys" in the North. Think of words that are common to your home area that may not be common in other areas.
3. Difference between "symbols" and "signals." While symbols represent something else, signals have an intrinsic meaning. If a policeman is directing traffic, he "signals" what to do with his hands.
