1. Types of disorders

e. Hearing impaired: Disorders related to the individual's ability to perceive and discriminate the sounds of the language.

  1. Hard of hearing: reduced hearing, but hearing is the main means of receptive communication. Usually can be helped with hearing aids.
  2. Deaf: hearing reduced to point where it cannot be used for main means of receptive communication. Most "deaf" individuals have some residual hearing, but hearing aids may not be helpful.
  3. When do you have trouble hearing? Most of us have some trouble hearing when we have a bad cold, as it affects the ears ability to transmit sound.
