Activities
S.O.S. members are involved in the folowing areas:
- Monitoring the Saugahatchee Creek and tributaries and testing for changes in water quality, including dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, turbidity, alkalinity, hardness, and coliforn bacteria (like E. coli). Our monitors are certified yearly by Alabama Water Watch, and our results are accepted by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). Data collected by S.O.S. are entered into ADEM's database and reporting system
- Reporting any activites which degrade the water quality of the Saugahatchee Creek, including industrial and sewage waste, siltation from erosion, destruction of streambank habitat, etc.
- Promoting the Saugahatchee Creek for recreactional uses, including fishing and boating.
- Advancing environmental education through seminars and visits to schools, civic groups and other organizations to demonstrate the value of the Saugahatchee Creek as a biological and ecological resource to the community
