FORY 3020 - Forest Biology
Students of Forestry, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture
Structure: Class will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:00 to 8:50 AM
in Forestry and Wildlife Sciences Building Room 1221.
Description: This course will give students an introduction to basic concepts of plant
pathology and entomology. Lectures will cover the classification and identification of
important forest pests and identify the weak areas in the life cycle of both insects and
fungi of commercially important forest and shade trees, that with proper management can
minimize the losses currently observed in the forests of North America.

Grading and Class Requirements:
Quizzes: There will be 4 quizzes (25 pts each) given during the class periods. These dates are listed in the Important Date Schedule.
Exams: Four exams (100 points) and a comprehensive final exam (200 points) will be
used to determine grades. The exams will be essay and short answer. Exam dates are listed
in the Important Date Schedule.
Pest Request Letters: You will be required to answer and write 4 correspondence letters to homeowners who have e-mailed a disease or insect question (50 pts each). Due dates are listed in the Important Date Schedule.
Make Up: Make up exams and quizzes will given only with an official excused absence from a physician.
Attendance: As stated in the Tiger Cub it is expected that students will attend all lectures. While the text book is a good source of basic pathological and entomological material, lectures also cover important material NOT included in the textbook. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and be ready to start lecture at 8:00 AM
Grading: The final grade will be based on the following:
Grade Scale: Grading will be based on a 10 point scale with 90-100=A, 80-89=B, 70-79=C, 60-69=D, average for the course.
Course Policies: There will be no unannounced quizzes or tests.
Academic dishonesty or cheating (Tiger Cub p. 85, 2000-2001) is an offense that will be reported to the Academic Honesty Committee (Tiger Cub p. 94).
Harassment and discrimination (Tiger Cub p. 101) will not be tolerated in class. Office Hours: You are welcomed to come at any time to discuss course matters or questions if you can catch us in our office or laboratories. However, times have been set aside that we will be sure to be around so that you can stop by. Also, you can schedule an alternative time if necessary.
