Reading to Learn

Rationale: This lesson is to help 3rd grade students learn strategies to help them comprehend while they are reading. One thing that fluent readers do while they are reading is to think about what is going on in the story by making predictions, and how it relates to them. Students will be asked questions after the reading. The questions will be personal, evaluation questions, interpretation questions and divergent thinking. The students will be taught how to do this with a teacher scaffolding. The teacher will read a book or a page of an article out loud and ask questions while reading. We will be reading from "Walk Two Moons."

∙Say: Today we are going to learn the skill of asking questions after we have read. This is a valuable skill to learn because it helps you read on a deeper level. This skill will help you relate to the story in your own life or teach you something you can learn later. When we read it is important that we are thinking of questions that relate back to what we are reading. We should ask right there questions, putting it together questions, writer and me questions and on my own questions. Right there questions are questions that you can answer by looking at the text. Putting it together questions are questions that want the reader to put it together. These can be answered by finding the point of the text. Writer and me questions can be answered if you use your own knowledge and how it relates to the text. On my own questions are questions that are open-ended. You will not find the answer in the text, the answer is drawn from our own mind.

∙Say: Now I am going to read the beginning of "Cinderella." "ONCE there was a gentleman who married, for his second wife, the proudest and most haughty woman that was ever seen. She had been married before, and already had two daughters who were exactly like her in all things. He had likewise, by his first wife, a young daughter, but of unequalled goodness and sweetness of temper, which she took from her mother, who was the best creature in the world. This sweet little girl missed her mother, who had died, terribly much." O.k. so let's do a right there question, remember this can be answered in one sentence from the text. The question is: "How does the author describe the woman the gentleman is marrying? Answer would be: the proudest and most haughty woman that was ever seen.

∙Say: Now I am going to read the beginning of "Snow White," "Once upon a time there lived a lovely princess with fair skin and blue eyes. She was so fair that she was named Snow White. Her mother died when Snow White was a baby and her father married again. This queen was very pretty but she was also very cruel." Here is a putting it together question: why do you think the queen was very cruel? Answer: Because she was jealous of Snow White's beauty.

∙Say: When I read the beginning of the two fairy tale samples, I was thinking about how the two princesses relate to each other. My writer and me question is: how do the two fairy tales relate to each other the answer is: They both relate because they both are girls who are probably not going to like their step mothers. Say: My personal responseto these princesses' stories is "if I were you I would have told somebody that I was being mistreated." Also you can ask that as an on my own question: what would I do if I had an evil stepmother: my response might be, I would convince my dad not to marry someone that I did not get along with but that is not the only answer. After evaluating their behavior, I think that Snow White was smart to run away and I think that was dangerous. I am using divergent thinking when I think of a different ending or a difference in the plot. I wonder about how Cinderella's life would have been different if she didn't have a fairy godmother. I think that would change the entire story." Can you think of some more examples of what you would do if you were in the princess's shoes?" "How do you judge the princess and the step mother's actions?" Can you relate to the story or think of another story that is like this one?

∙Say: I want you to think about who the main character is in the story and how if you were the main character if you would do something different. I also want you to think about how you feel about the characters actions. I also want you to think how this story relates to other stories you have read or events in your own life. While you read and you are making predictions I want you to think about how you think it should have ended.      

∙Say: this story is about a girl who is on an amazing adventure to find out what happened to her mother when she did not return to her and her father in Kentucky. The girl travels across the country with her grandparents and learns more about herself and her mom. I wonder why her mom left and did not come back. I wonder if the girl finds her.

∙Say: Everyone take out your book, "Walk Two Moons." I am going to show you or model for you in the first chapter how I want you to do ask questions. "Chapter One," "A face at the window," On the first page we find out how old our main character is and we also have a new word we can add to our vocabulary chart. The word is caboodle. What do you think caboodle means by the way it is used in the text?  I think it means a lot. Add it to your chart and the definition. Then continue to read out loud. Say: I thought of a question. So I am going to take a note card and write my question down. My question is "Why is she so concerned about nature?" I have a lot of questions actually, "Why did she think the landscape at her old house belonged to her?" Also "Why did they have to move?" Continue reading and don't stop till the end of the next page.

∙Say: Now that we know how the thirteen year old girl feels about moving, I want you to take a note card and write how you think you would feel if you had to move. Finish reading chapter one and stop.

∙ Say: Now take another note card and I want you to write what you have found important in the story so far.

∙Now write personal, evaluation, interpretation and divergent questions on the board. Say: While you read independently, I want you to use your note book to write questions that you are pondering while you read that are like the ones I have written on the board. I want you to make the first page a vocabulary page and we will add it to our vocabulary chart.
