ACTIVITY 1: Solving Inequalities

Introduction:

In this activity, students will use a TI-83 graphing calculator to solve inequalities. The activity should be taught after students have already learned to solve linear equations. This activity will build on the prior knowledge of solving linear equations and using similar steps to solve inequalities. Students will be given multiple ways to solve inequalities. By the end of the lesson they should feel comfortable in each method and choose which bests suits their abilities.

Conclusion:
At the end of this activity, the students should have an understanding of multiple ways to solve inequalities. They should also realize how several of the methods to solving inequalities relates back to solving equations and solving systems of equations. Students should be able to choose the best method for them to solve inequalities and see how mathematic concepts build on one another. Student now have multiple ways of checking their answers after solving them on paper or seeing if their solution makes sense.
