Considering the fact that water covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface, it's important for us as “Earthlings” to have at least a basic understanding of the biological processes occurring in this watery realm. After completing this WebQuest, students will have been introduced to some biological principles. Designing and setting up a model aquatic environment will help the students develop an appreciation for the complexity of the underwater biological and chemical interactions taking place that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Generally speaking, increased knowledge of a subject area enhances a person's ability to develop an appreciation and respect for that subject. In this case our subject, the aquatic environment, is worthy of our appreciation and respect as it plays a major role in our existence on this “blue” planet. In the short run, however, completion of this exercise may save the lives of hundred or even thousands of potential aquarium inhabitants by educating students about the importance of water quality, food types, and waste remediation in an aquatic environment.
