Objectives. In the lecture, students engage in comparative study of external and internal morphological features of insects and related arthropods and gain an understanding of the importance of these features to phylogeny, classification and physiology. In the lab, students develop the ability to prepare specimens for observation of these features and to produce accurate, high quality biological illustrations.

Required Text: Manual of Insect Morphology, from Copy Cat.
Recommended Text: The Insects, Structure and Function, by Chapman.
Recommended Text: Evolution of the Insects, by Grimaldi and Engel.
Recommended Text: Principles of Insect Morphology, by Snodgrass

Morphological Exposition. Students registered for credit for ENTM 6440 conduct an independent study on comparative morphology of an insect or morphological system of the student's choice. This consists of narrative descriptions or explanations, illustrations and references to literature or internet resources, preferably in electronic format.

Rules. The instructor intends to follow the rules regarding "Faculty Responsibilities in the Instructional Program," "Academic Regulations," and "Class Attendance" outlined in the Tiger Cub and agrees with the assertion that "College work proceeds at such a pace that regular class attendance is necessary to receive proper instruction." The "Code of Student Discipline" (Tiger Cub, p. 79-82) will also be enforced. Arrangements to make up missed Exams or work due to excused absences shall be initiated by the student. I excuse absences for the following reasons: a. Illness of the student or serious illness of a member of the student’s immediate family. I require a note from the attending physician or AU Infirmary. b. The death of a member of the student’s immediate family. I require a printed obituary or funeral notice. c. Trips for members of the student organizations sponsored by an academic unit, trips for University classes, and trips for participation in intercollegiate athletic events. I request formal notification from approppriate University personnel to document the student’s participation in such activities or trips. d. Subpoena for court appearance. Written documentation may be required. e. Any other reason the instructor deems appropriate. Students with demonstrated need to take the final Exam before the scheduled date must present a written request from his or her dean requesting an early Exam period. Students who require special assistance should discuss their needs with the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Please bring a memo from the Office of the Program for Students with Disabilities. If students do not have a memo, they should schedule an appointment with a member of the professional staff in that office (1244 Haley Center, 844-2096).
