"Talkin Smack" AU Plainsman
|
The following is an interview article that was posted in the Auburn Plainsman on February 16, 2006:
Talkin’ SmackMatthew Shelley Assistant Sports Editor By day, he’s mild-mannered student Allan Westenhofer — but at night, he becomes the amazing master of the mat, Foochi! The Plainsman pinned Westenhofer down for a quick interview and discovered the source of his killer instinct.
I know this is completely irrelevant to what you do, but who’s your favorite pro wrestler?
I don’t even know that I can give you a pro wrestler, except for The Rock.
If you were a super hero, what would your name be?
Well, I got a nickname that all the wrestlers call me. I’ve had the nickname since, like, middle school. Everyone calls me Foochi. My last name is Westenhofer and they called me Westefoochi. So I’ve always just been called Foochi.
If you had a sidekick, what would it be?
Let me think. This is a tough one. Who do you have for a sidekick?
I don’t know. I’d have a tiger — a little tiger cub.
Who is your hero?
I’d say Tyler Durden from “Fight Club.” He can put up with anything and just keep fighting.
If you had a catchphrase, what would it be?
“Everybody falls down.” It’s inevitable. It just matters how fast you get up.
What is Spam made of?
Um, hearts of pig and others. I don’t know; it’s just pig others.
Explain the difference between wrestling and ’rasslin.
Wrestling is something you do with a referee on a wrestling mat. ’Rasslin is something you do with your friends ... or girlfriend.
If you could wrestle one celebrity, who would it be?
Ghandi.
How did I know you were going to say that? Who would win in a fight between Chuck Norris and Darth Vader?
Darth Vader.
So you’re not down with the whole Chuck Norris thing? You know his tears can cure cancer, right? Yeah, unfortunately, he’s never cried. Sorry, I had to get that joke off my chest. OK, here’s a real humdinger here. Define antidisestablishmentarianism.
You ask me this when I get off work at 1 in the morning. It’s a fancy way of saying you just got knocked off your horse.
You know those little candy hearts with the stupid sayings that you get around Valentine’s Day? Confectionery masterpieces or fruity Rolaids?
Fruity Rolaids.
Thank you! What’s your favorite sports movie?
I don’t know. “Remember the Titans.”
What’s your favorite movie quote?
I draw blanks now. If you ask me any other time of the day, I’d have a ton of them to shoot off for you. Oh; “Until you’ve hit rock bottom, you’ll never know who you really are” (Fight Club).

Wrestling team looks to future By Matthew Shelley Assistant Sports Editor September 22, 2005
LOCKING CLAWS: Aric Clem (left) grapples with John Mark in a preseason wrestling practice. The Auburn wrestling club team placed fourth in the SEC and 18th at the NCWA championships in Dallas, Texas, last year.
The Auburn club wrestling team began practice for the upcoming season last week.
The team has been diligently preparing for its season-opening tournament Oct. 22 at the Georgia Tech Open.
"We just started practicing three days a week," said Jeremiah Lamphere, a senior on the wrestling team. "Some of us have even been practicing with our high school teams."
Last year, the wrestling team had a good showing, placing fourth in the SEC and 18th at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Championships in Dallas, Texas, where 50 teams competed.
Auburn took six wrestlers to nationals. Sophomore Scott Terry placed fourth in the tournament, landing him All-American honors for the second year in a row.
This year, Auburn hopes to improve on last year's success.
"We want to be top three in the SEC and then place top 10 in the nation," Lamphere said.
Although Auburn has set high goals for this season, the road to nationals begins with the Georgia Tech Open.
"We're looking forward to the Georgia Tech Open," said Trey Hamer, a graduate student on the team. "It's an open tournament with about 300 wrestlers. There's good competition from all over the Southeast."
The wrestling team also enjoys home meets at Auburn.
We like the home meets the most," Lamphere said. "All the guys can get their friends and family out there to watch."
Although all the home meets have not been determined yet, Lamphere said they should be announced in the next two weeks.
Lamphere and Hamer both agreed that the University of Central Florida will be the team's toughest opponent this year.
UCF won nationals last year to become the top ranked team in the nation.
Hamer said there are roughly 30-35 wrestlers on the Auburn squad this year.
"It's about 50-50 with young guys and experienced guys on the team," Hamer said.
Lamphere and Hamer have been impressed with a couple of additions to the team this year in Nick Paolucci and Aaryn Melnikoff.
"They are showing a lot of extra effort and have excellent technique. And they have obviously had good coaching," Lamphere said.
"Both of them have strong technique and a great work ethic," Hamer said.
A big addition to the wrestling club program this year has been the Arnold Umbach Fund for Excellence scholarships.
The scholarships were created in honor of Arnold "Swede" Umbach Sr. who spent 27 years as a wrestling coach at Auburn.
The club wrestling team is the only club team to offer scholarships at Auburn.
Last year, the scholarships were awarded to Trey Hamer, Jeremiah Lamphere, Scott Terry and Anthony White.
"The scholarships will really help get high school guys interested in wrestling at Auburn," Hamer said.
The season begins with the Georgia Tech Open and lasts through the NCWA Championships from March 11 through 12, 2006.

In his next match he had a one point loss to Lynch from Catawba College, putting him in the wrestle backs. He then went on to pin his next two opponents which put him in the consolation semi-finals. In his semi-finals match he defeated Black from Cincinatti University 12-3. In his last match, wrestling for third and fourth place, Scott had to wrestle the same wrestler who defeated him the previous day. It was a hard wrestled match but Scott was unable to defeat him and lost 10-5, leaving him with a fourth place finish, and becoming a two-time All-American. All of the other wrestlers did quite well but were unable to place in the top 6. Jeremiah Lamphere won four matches defeating wrestlers from Apprentice, Rensseleaer, Adirondack, and Miami, and made it to the consolation quarter-finals. Austin Rousayne finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, Andrew Kunzel finished with a 1-2 record, and Trey Hamer and Anthony White finished with a 0-2 record. Over all coach Marko Tuokko was quite happy with how his wrestlers finished and pleased with their performances. Arnold "Swede" Umbach Fund for Excellence
|
Arnold “Swede” Umbach introduced the sport of wrestling to the Deep South. He spent 27 years as coach at Auburn University showing his opponents what it takes to win wrestling championships.
His Tigers captured 25 team trophies in the conference he founded, the Southeastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. They won 249 dual meets, lost just 28 and tied five. Only one of those defeats was at the hands of a conference opponent. He coached 127 conference champions and four national winners.
Umbach earned renown not only as an athlete and coach, but also as one of wrestling’s pioneer officials. He served the sport in many ways, giving hundreds of free clinics, acting as president of the National Coaches' Association and a member of various rules committees, authoring three books and hosting the first NCAA tournament held in the South. Coach Umbach was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and was named coach of the year three times while at Auburn.
To honor Coach Umbach and at the same time promote the growth of wrestling at Auburn University, a fund for excellence has been created in his memory through the Auburn University Foundation. This year it will provide four partial scholarships to members of the Auburn Wrestling Club to help cover their educational expenses and will be administered in the same way as traditional academic scholarships through the Auburn University Foundation. This endowment is a fitting tribute to the man who had a profound impact on many lives by personal contact or through his work in building wrestling programs at the collegiate level. |
