America Speaks, the Washington, D.C. nonprofit dedicated to developing serious national deliberations that permit real, everyday citizens to influence national agendas, priorities and policy--is on its way!
In late April of this year, a conference was held at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wisconsin compliments of The Johnson Foundation. Convened by Dr. Carolyn Lukensmeyer, Executive Director of America Speaks, it brought together a highly diverse group of pro-democratic civic leaders and professionals from coast-to-coast.
The goal was to get them together to do several things:
Quite remarkably, despite the short time and ambitious agenda, the mission was accomplished. The 3 regional teams (northern Kentucky; central Carolinas, Puget Sound) plus the National Resource Team developed a strong rapport, some excellent plans to implement and a set of principles called the "Principles of Healthy Democracy." These can also be accessed on the website of The Council for Excellence in Government.
The Council, which lent technical support at the conference, is also lending such to the continuing development of this project though its website which will help synergize the three projects and their continuing relationship to the National Resource Team.
