Swing Dance Calendar for Auburn:

The Auburn University Swing Dance Association offers FREE Monday, Wednesday, and Friday night dance classes and practice at the Jan Dempsey Arts Center in Auburn, Alabama. The Arts Center is behind the Frank Brown Recreation Center, across from Guthries, on Opelika Road (near the Post Office).

EAST COAST, CHARLESTON, ETC.: On "Friday Night Swing" we always have a beginner East Coast lesson, and usually an intermediate East Coast lesson, or perhaps a beginner lesson in Charleston, Lindy, Balboa, West Coast, or other type of swing dance. Friday Night Swing is FREE, at the Jan Dempsey Arts Center, in the performance room, 7:00-9:00 pm. For more info, contact AUSDA.

LINDY HOP: On "Lindy Wednesday" we learn or improve our Lindy Hop. At the first lesson of each month, we teach a beginner lesson in Lindy Hop; the other 3 or 4 nights we generally practice our Lindy Hop, or Charleston, or line dances such Shim Sham or Big Apple, or just whatever moves us that night (but NO beginner lesson except for the first one in the month!). Lindy Wednesday is FREE, at the Jan Dempsey Arts Center, in the large classroom, 6:30-8:30 pm. For more info, contact Linda Kerr.

BALBOA: On "Balboa Monday" we learn and practice Balboa, which is a swing dance that developed in the 1930s in southern California. Pure balboa is danced in closed position (and typically quite close), but dancers usually add kicks, spins, toss-outs, and other open-position moves to their bal. Balboa is cool, fun, and a comfortable dance when the music is fast. Learning to do balboa can help you get the hang of that "lead and follow" stuff that dance instructors are always making such a big deal about. You don't need to already know any balboa to attend. Balboa Monday is FREE, at the Jan Dempsey Arts Center, 7:30-9:00 pm. For more info, contact Eric Larsen.

Appropriate Dress: comfortable clothing (not tight jeans) and shoes with slick bottoms (not tennis shoes) that will stay on your feet (not clogs or flip flops). Ladies, if you wear a skirt, make sure to wear bike shorts or something similar underneath!
