Auburn University Swing Dance AssociationMore information about our organization:
Auburn University Swing Dance Association (AUSDA) is a chartered
organization at Auburn University. We are a non-profit group, and all our officers
and instructors work on a volunteer basis, except for special requested private lessons.
The Friday night lessons are always free! We will teach one or more styles, including East Coast (single and triple step), Lindy Hop, Charleston,
Balboa, Shag, or line dances such as Big Apple, Jitterbug Stroll, and Shim Sham.
The lesson is usually from 7-8, with open dancing till 9; occasionally lessons will
go a little past 8:00.
No experience is needed; no partner required; you can start anytime, there is a
beginner lesson in one of the styles every week. All ages are welcome, but this is
best suited for high school students and older. You do not have to be an Auburn
University student or employee to dance with us. Please wear shoes with slick
bottoms (not tennis shoes), and shoes that will stay on your feet - no high heels,
flip-flops, or clogs; ladies please wear shorts underneath skirts. During the lesson,
please pay attention to the instructor, and do not talk when she/he is trying to
speak, so everyone can hear what is being said.
We meet most every Friday night during the semester, from 7-9 pm, at the Jan
Dempsey Arts Center, in the Performance Room. However, occasionally our
meetings are moved or canceled, due to Jan Dempsey needing the room for other
purposes, or another dance event happening elsewhere, or a holiday.
When a class is cancelled or moved, we will send out an announcement on the email group.
In some cases, this is the ONLY notification you will
receive. So if you're not already on one of these list, please join one (or give us
your email, and we will add it for you):
When you put your name and email address on our sign-in sheet, we will
add your email address to the AuburnSwing group, unless you tell us
otherwise. To unsubscribe entirely, please email
(AuburnSwing@gmail.com rather than
posting your unsubscription or subscription change requests to the entire list.
Other ways to communicate and check our schedule:
AUSDA web page,
http://www.auburn.edu/student_info/swing/calendar-au.php, where you can always go to
check out our current schedule.
Registering for dance classes:
At the beginning of each of the Recreation Department's quarters (January,
April, June, and September), each person is required to fill out a new waiver on the back. We have these blank forms available at
every dance meeting.
Becoming an instructor:
We can always use more instructors, but there are some requirements,
including: you must have been attending regular Friday night swing dance classes
for at least one year before beginning to teach; you must attend at least 75% of the
dance meetings per semester; you must be skilled in teaching; and you must know
the various types of swing dance that we teach. For the full requirements, and to
see about becoming an instructor, please see one of us at a dance meeting.
