General Questions

Are all students required to attend CWE?

All incoming freshmen must attend Camp War Eagle before they can register for fall semester classes.  If a student does not attend Camp War Eagle, they will not be able to register for classes until August 15, after ALL students have attended Camp War Eagle and SOS (transfer orientation).  If you absolutely can not attend any Camp War Eagle session, please contact our office.

What if I am taking classes at Auburn in the summer?

If you plan to take summer classes at Auburn, you will need to contact your advisor in your college or school to register for summer classes.  If you are attending one of the summer mini-semesters, you will be required to attend a  Camp War Eagle session that falls outside of the mini-semester in which you are taking classes.  If you are attending both of the mini-semesters or the full summer semester, your advisor will assist you in registering for a special section of UNIV 1000: The Auburn Experience.  This class will present information similar to that which you would receive at CWE.  During this course, you will attend one of the CWE advising and registration sessions in which you will register for your fall classes.

Student Questions

What should I bring?

You will need to bring comfortable, casual clothing for all three days of CWE; comfortable shoes for walking; a pillow and sheets (or sleeping bag), as linens will not be provided; towels, washcloths, and toiletries such as shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.; an alarm clock; personal spending money; and a backpack.  It is highly suggested that you do not bring any valuable items to CWE.

When do I need to take the Math Placement Test?

The Math Placement Test should be completed online at least two weeks prior to your CWE session.  A link to this test may be found on the Student Program page.  Students who do not complete the Math Placement Test prior to the deadline will take their test during their CWE session.

Can I choose my roommate for CWE?

Roommates are assigned on a random basis, therefore we can not accept requests for roommates.

I am attending CWE with a friend from High School.  Can we be together?

Students are assigned at random to groups of 10-12 students.  In order to create the best opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, you will most likely not be grouped with other students from your hometown or high school.  There will be some free time during the program where you can spend time with people from other groups and meet up with your hometown friends if you choose.

What happens if I don't attend the meetings and/or small group sessions?

Failure to attend all of the CWE meetings and small group sessions may result in your not being able to register for classes.  You will be allowed to return to a later CWE session.

I have friends that already attend Auburn.  Can they visit me or can I visit them while at CWE?

You may not leave campus during CWE except during the organized off-campus trips on the first night which are led by Camp Counselors.  Leaving campus at anytime during your CWE session may result in your not being able to register for classes.  Current Auburn students are highly discouraged from visiting CWE participants and may be asked to leave.  If you wish to visit any friends or relatives at Auburn, please do so before or after your CWE session.

Should I bring money to Camp?

It is recommended that you bring spending money to CWE as some of the activities on the first night, such as the late-night trip for ice cream, will require money.  Students will also attend a business fair in which some businesses may offer products for sale.  There are also bookstores both on campus and within walking distance of campus that you may be interested in visiting before or after Camp War Eagle to purchase Auburn merchandise.

I have not yet received my housing assignment from Housing and Residence Life.  When should I expect to hear something?

Housing assignments will be mailed after Memorial Day and will continue to be mailed through June.  Should you have specific questions regarding your housing situation, please call the Housing and Residence Life Office at (334)844-4580 or visit their website.

When will I register for classes?

Students will register for classes on the morning of the third day of CWE at their respective college/school advising session.

If I attend an earlier session of CWE, will I have a better chance of getting classes?

No.  There are a select number of classes withheld for each session of CWE so that each student has an equal chance of selecting the necessary and desired core courses.  Whether you choose session 1 or 8, you will have the same opportunity for classes.

Parent Questions

Are parents required to attend?

The CWE parent program is not required and a student will not be in any way disadvantaged if a parent does not attend.  However, the parent program provides a wealth of information to parents of incoming freshmen to better familiarize them with the university and its programs and services.

Where will parents stay?

No housing is provided for parents during the program.  There are numerous hotels in the Auburn and Opelika area that are available to Camp War Eagle parents.  The Auburn-Opelika Convention and Visitors Bureau has designed a website specifically for CWE parents to assist them in locating accommodations during their stay.  Further information can be obtained by calling the AOCVB at (334)887-8747 or by contacting our office.

Will my student need any money?

Your student will need money: (1) If he/she chooses to participate in "Ice Cream After Dark," which is one of the late night options on the first night of CWE.  The Camp Counselors will be walking with interested students to Toomer's Drugs for ice cream and/or lemonade; (2) If he/she wants to join SAA (Student Alumni Association), although checks are acceptable; (3) If he/she chooses to eat meals and/or snacks not provided through CWE.  Your student may also be interested in visiting one of the local bookstores for Auburn merchandise before or after Camp War Eagle.

Oops...my child forgot blankets, a pillow, a sleeping bag, etc.  How can I get these items to him/her?

Find a Parent Counselor-or any CWE staff member-and we can make sure your student gets whatever items you have for him/her.

We have not yet taken care of the medical forms we need to.  Can my child still register for classes at CWE?

Yes!  Each student will be asked to sign a Letter of Understanding.  This is a form that simply states you will turn in your necessary medical forms within 30 days of Camp War Eagle.  This form acts as a waiver that releases the registration hold on your student's record so he/she can register for classes.  If you are insure if you have all the necessary forms, or you need a new copy, visit the AU Medical Clinic's website to download the necessary forms.

I have a mobility issue that makes it difficult to walk long distances.  Can I still participate in CWE?

Yes!  We will make every effort to accommodate your needs.  We have a golf cart and a minivan that we can use to help you get where you need to go.  Please advise a CWE staff member upon your arrival that you will need such accommodations.

My child has a disability...what accommodations can be made during CWE?

Contact the Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) at (334)844-2096 or by e-mail at haynemd@auburn.edu for Dr. Haynes, Director.  They will determine what accommodations would be appropriate for a productive and enjoyable CWE experience, and share any necessary information with our office.  Disability information is highly confidential and should NOT be sent to the CWE office.  More information can be found on the PSD website.

What happens if my child changes his/her major during CWE?  How will I find out about it?

All major changes will be posed after lunch on the second day of CWE, which is BEFORE you go to Academic Advising.  That way you will know which college/school advising session to attend with your student.

When will my student register for classes?

Students will register for classes on the morning of the third day of CWE at their respective college/school.  Parents are not permitted in the computer labs during the class registration process.  Many colleges/schools do offer alternate programming for parents while their students are registering for classes.

Do I go through CWE with my student?  If not, when will we see each other?

The student program and parent program of CWE are two distinct programs with separate schedules.  You may view these schedules on the respective Student or Parent program pages.  You may see your child at:

  • The Pep Rally (Although parents and students are seated separately)

  • Lunch together on the second day (If you elect to eat together.  There is a parent-only lunch program offered for those interested.)

  • Academic advising on the second day through the end of free time

  • Academic advising on the third day

Should my student bring a computer to school?  Should it be a laptop or desktop?

A computer is a nice convenience for students, but it is not required by the University.  There are computer labs located throughout campus that are available for student use.  If you bring a computer, you will need to decide which type is easier and you should ask your department, college or school during CWE to see if they have any requirements or recommendations.  More specific answers and information can be found from the Office of Information Technology at (334)844-4944 or by visiting their website.
