ALCOHOL IS THE MOST COMMON DATE RAPE DRUG!
-
Roches, GHB, Roofies, Special K, Ecstasy, X – they are often colorless, odorless, tasteless club drugs that, when slipped into alcohol or soft drinks, can lower defenses and inhibitions and make the victim an easy target for rape.
- Rohypnol, manufactured by Hoffman LaRoche is from the class of drugs called benzodiazepines. This drug, intended for use as a surgical anesthetic, muscle relaxant, or sleeping pill, has a rapid onset of action of about 15 minutes. It is 7-10 times more powerful than diazepam (Valium) and 4-10 times as potent as Triazolam (Halcion).
Street names for the drug: Roffies, Rophies, R-2’s, LaRocha, Mexican Valium, Rope, Rib, Roach, Roofenol, Ruffies, or Roches
- Another powerful date rape drug, GHB (Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate) also offers deadly potential. Although it presently is not produced in the United States, rapists make it available here. Street names for GHB are Liquid X, Grievous Bodily Harm, Saltwater, Scoop, Easy Lay, and Gamma-O. Most commonly found as a liquid or powder, GHB is colorless, odorless and tasteless although some claim it has a slightly salty taste. Onset of action is 15-20 minutes with marked lethargy, extreme intoxication, impaired judgement nausea and vomiting and dizziness noted. GHB, when mixed with alcohol, kills!!
- Because GHB is generally a homemade manufacture, strength and dosage may vary. When mixed improperly it turns to “lye,” a paint stripping ingredient which is highly caustic and will damage tissues.
- Date rape drugs are ten time more potent than valium and only a few small drops mimic the effects of a six-pack of beer. The effects of these drugs can be felt in less than ten minutes and can last for several hours, resulting in slurred speech, impaired judgment, confusion, amnesia, respiratory difficulties, slowed heart rate, and even coma and death.
- Never Leave your drink unattended.
- Never accept a drink from a stranger.
- If you think you or a friend have been drugged, get medical help immediately.
- Don’t accept help from a stranger or from a guy you’ve just met, and leave only with a trusted female friend.
- Overdose can occur rapidly even if you have ingested very little – “sleeping it off” can be deadly!
