Updates from the Vice President of Student Affairs

Convocation

The Office of the Provost has initiated a Common Book project. The project is chaired by Constance Relihan in the College of Liberal Arts. She is chairing a committee that will read multiple books and recommend three books to the Provost for final approval. The Common Book will begin with the fall 2010 class. A component of launching the project will be a University-wide Convocation that will occur the Sunday afternoon before the first day of class fall 2010. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for planning the Convocation. This will impact the timing of Welcome Week activities. A committee will be assembled soon and planning will begin. Please contact Keri-Anne Davis (davisk1@auburn.edu) if you are interested in participating in reading the book entries or planning the Convocation.

Development Priorities

More information on this topic will be made available via the mid-term work group report on Development activities. However, it is so important that I thought it also should be in these notes. The Development Workgroup has identified four fundraising projects:

(1) The Center for Student Leadership and Service,
(2) Emergency Student Aid,
(3) Memorials Fund, and
(4) Student Health and Wellness Center.

Total fundraising goals are approximately $30 million. Beginning in the spring semester, the Vice President for Student Affairs will be spending 30-40 percent of his time on raising money for Division initiatives. We need everyone’s help to identify potential prospects.

UNIV Courses and Learning Communities

Staff members in the Division of Student have been invited to participate in UNIV courses and coordinate learning communities as part of the overall University effort to retain first-year students. A few have followed through on invitations to teach UNIV courses. Thank you. In addition to UNIV courses, the Division of Student Affairs also will establish a series of Learning Communities. This is a great opportunity for us to get involved with advancing student learning beyond the classroom. I hope you will participate. Please contact Keri-Anne Davis (davisk1@auburn.edu) if you are interested in participating.
