About SIAM
Applied mathematics, in partnership with computational science, is essential in
solving many real-world problems, from modeling physical, chemical, and
biomedical phenomena; to designing engineered parts, structures, and systems
to optimize performance; to planning and managing financial and marketing
strategies; to understanding and optimizing manufacturing processes; and many
others. To ensure the strongest interactions between mathematics and other
scientific and technological communities, it remains the policy
of SIAM to:
- advance the application of mathematics and computational science to
science, engineering, industry, and society;
- promote research that could lead to effective new mathematical and
computational methods and techniques for science, engineering,
industry, and society;
- provide media for the exchange of information and ideas among
mathematicians, engineers, and scientists.

Sections
SIAM encourages the formation of sections consisting
of members residing in a geographic area. Sections organize their own
one- and two-day meetings. Some sections involve nearby university chapters
in their meetings.
University Chapters
SIAM invites faculty members to organize
student chapters. Activities may include local meetings on topics in
engineering, computing, and applied mathematics; tours of industrial
laboratories; and team projects such as undergraduate competitions.
Activity Groups
The members of a SIAM activity group share an
interest in a discipline or applications area. There are currently activity
groups on:
- Control and Systems Theory
- Discrete Mathematics
- Dynamical Systems
- Geometric Design
- Geosciences
- Imaging Science
- Life Sciences
- Linear Algebra
- Optimization
- Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions
- Supercomputing
These groups plan their own activities, e.g., conferences, minisymposia at
SIAM's conferences and annual meetings, newsletters (paper and/or e-mail),
and prizes, and have SIAM staff support in implementing them. Each year, a
directory of members is compiled for each activity group and distributed to
its members. Additional information about activity groups is available
online at
http://www.siam.org/siags/siags.htm.
