In 2004, I was shocked when my nephew was diagnosed with autism. My family and I immediately realized the importance of facing this disorder with action. With extensive research and early intervention, Jackson is now a thriving five-year-old who continues to amaze me each day.
As the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S. today, autism occurs once in every 150 American children. It affects a child’s social interaction and communication skills, and its cause and cure are unknown. Even though there is no known cure, breakthroughs with medicine are being made to help children recover from autism. With the number of cases on the rise, I believe that it is imperative to spread awareness of this perplexing disorder and to promote determination in finding a cure.
Few students realize that Auburn is playing an active role in aiding the autism community. The Auburn University Autism Center is a facility located on campus where my nephew’s road to recovery has been made possible. With access to such a successful facility in Auburn, I feel strongly about encouraging my community to promote awareness and funding for our own fight against autism. |
