Come on down, our door's always open

Eric Kammerud is the editor of The Auburn Plainsman.

Greetings, and welcome to summer quarter 1997. My name is Eric. I will be your editor this quarter.

And what a quarter it promises to be.

If this week is any proof of what's to come, there will be no shortage of excitement in the news department.

We plan to aggressively pursue stories on the transit system, the health center renovations, the continuing trustees conflict, the imminent legislative special session and any other story that might arise along the way.

As I told the Board of Student Communications during my interview for this position, I believe my work as campus editor over the past nine months has prepared me to handle the issues currently facing the University.

I'm confident I can live up to that statement, but will welcome criticism from those who don't agree.

Which brings me to my next point.

I know that I had originally said I didn't think there would be many exterior changes to the paper that readers would definitely notice, but if you've gotten this far into the paper you realize there have been quite a few.

The front page happened kind of by accident. I set out to do a little tweaking here and there to things I thought could use a little improvement. The tweaking turned into twisting, and, well, you can see the result.

I think I have given the paper a more progressive look, and several of my coworkers have agreed. If you the reader have any comments or criticisms please send them along in the form of a letter to the editor or even just a telephone call.

I'm probably inviting all sorts of trouble on myself, but that's part of the job.

And it's a job I'm honored and proud to do.

During the more than a year and a half I've spent as a steady employee here, I've developed a love for (or maybe addiction to) the college newspaper business.

The long hours and hard work for a menial wage all disappear on Thursday when I walk around campus and see people reading the paper.

By the way, if you do see me on campus, feel free to stop me and ask me questions, tell me what I'm doing right or what I'm doing wrong. I'm not a mean person, I'm just not photogenic.

For those of you who want to join our merry band, feel free to stop by the office anytime. I'm usually here every afternoon. We're always looking for new people to write, take pictures, edit, sell ads or any of a multitude of other jobs.

If you don't know where The Plainsman is, we are located in the basement of Foy Union, off the parking lot between Tichenor and Broun Halls and the L-Building, directly below Copy Cat. The phone number is 844-4130, the e-mail address is plainsm@mail.auburn.edu and you can find us on the web at www.auburn.edu/~plainsm/.

I look forward to hearing from you.
