If students pay, students should play
Picture this: you have made reservations at a fancy restaurant for you and a guest. You know exactly how much everything you order will be so you pay for your meal and reservations beforehand. The night of your meal, you arrive to find you will have to wait more than an hour for a table. Understandably, you would be upset. Well, the Auburn intramural system is not a fancy restaurant, but students who have already paid for intramurals out of their student fees are being turned away from participating in the sports they want to, and The Plainsman thinks something should be done about it. As it stands now, if a student and his/her buddies do not get to the sign-up tables during the first few hours of signing up, it is possible their team will not get to play. Reasons for this are lack of space and lack of officiating, both good arguments. But teams currently in the recreation league are having to play without officials anyway. The only real argument for teams getting turned away is lack of space. Auburn does suffer from a lack of space for intramural teams, especially football, basketball and softball Ñ two of which are played on the intramural field. | Perhaps teams can be set up at the Auburn soccer fields or the Auburn softball complex to relieve the stress put on the intramural field, so more teams will be able to register and play. Also, The Plainsman thinks a system of paying for intramurals should be worked out so that teams that want to play have to pay and students who have no interest in playing are free from those fees. Beyond teams getting turned away from playing football, the intramural department has not done the greatest job letting students know what sports are available for them. This quarter there are intramural tournaments in track and field and swimming as well as others that students probably never knew existed. Since students are helping to fund the Auburn intramural system, they should be made aware of what is available to them and how they can become involved. Though at times students do not show up for certain things their student fees go toward and do not show an interest in those things, the intramural system is one that enough students want to participate in and be a part of. If students pay to play, they should be able to. |

Since the dawn of time students have complained about registration. Whether it was the old drop-and-add system where students had to fight for classes or the telephone registration system where students had to spend countless hours on the telephone trying to find an open class, registration has been a headache. But the division of University computing has taken registration a step further with the introduction of PASSport, a system which enables students to register for classes, change personal information and view their schedules and grades over the World Wide Web. The system is available through the University directory portion of the Auburn home page and can be accessed with a student's e-mail address and his/her password. The Plainsman thinks this is a great idea and one that takes registration to the next level. In a computer age where technology is becoming so advanced, students who have access, which includes all Auburn students, will have the ability to see their schedules develop before their eyes. | Along with registering, students can use their browser to view the class make up to see how many seats are available and if the class is full. The only problem which might arise with this system is hackers gaining access to other people's accounts and perhaps changing schedules, but the same threat exists using the phone system with an ID number and PAC number. Beyond registering for class, students are able to choose what information they want on their accounts and whether they want their picture on there as well. So if a student is not included in the directory for some reason and wants to be, they can and vice-versa. This addition to PASSport will reduce the chance of computer stalking. Grades can also be accessed (but only viewed) on this system which will let students know immediately where they stand as far as classes and GPA. So to University computing, The Plainsman says thanks for taking the student to heart and creating the PASSport system so students can save time and have a chance to actually see what is going on during the registration process, along with using the new technology available today. |
