What is Phi Alpha Theta?

Phi Alpha Theta is the international honor society for History, first established in 1921 at the University of Arkansas. Represented at Auburn University by its Kappa Pi chapter, established in the spring of 1965, Phi Alpha Theta encourages the study and occupational culture of history by sponsoring research and professional development colloquia, hosting social events for its members and guests, and occasionally arranging field trips to history-related sites, exhibits, and events in the Southeast.  For more information about the society, please visit Phi Alpha Theta's national website

What are Membership Qualifications?  (Graduate students please click here)

Membership in Phi Alpha Theta requires that the applicant have better than a 3.0 overall GPA, and have better than a 3.1 GPA in 15 or more hours of completed history courses.  Applicants should be of at least junior-level standing, but are not required to be history majors.

How do I join?

Application can be made through the chapter officers, Phi Alpha Theta faculty advisor, your academic advisor, or any member of the History Department after completing, printing, signing, and submitting the on-line "interactive"
Phi Alpha Theta Application for Membership. Faculty advisor is Professor Tiffany Thomas, 323 Thach Hall,
(334)844-6195.  The annual initiation of new members usually takes place in February or early March, with additional recognition of newly inducted members at the annual Spring Banquet later in April.
